PRESS STATEMENT: Response to Amendment of Constitution to Safeguard the Institution of Marriage in Singapore
Following the announcement of the repeal of 377A of the Penal Code by Prime Minister Lee on August 21, we value the continuing efforts of the government to safeguard and protect the institution of marriage to remain between a man and a woman with the introduction of Article 156.
While the evolution of societal norms and values cannot be avoided, legislation can be in place to protect families in Singapore. We have seen the social repercussions of this alternative lifestyle in other nations that have removed safeguards. May we learn from their pains to protect for our generations to come what is precious and unique to us – traditional family values yet modern first world nation.
The Church cannot and will not pander to escalating popular norms. The Word of God is our standard. The Assemblies of God churches will continue to advocate for strong and godly marriages and families. We remain committed to upholding traditional family values that are the building blocks of our nation.
More than ever before, the church will need to be a stronger support for families – providing counseling and guidance, as well as educate our children and youths with biblical principles and godly values.
We will continue to be in prayer for our nation and leaders as they vote on the bill. May God grant them the wisdom and courage to make the right decisions as they lead Singapore into the future.

General Superintendent, The Assemblies of God of Singapore
